Both nurses and doctors are indispensable elements of health care and work closely together to provide patients with the best possible care. Both have very different roles and responsibilities. Can you go to med school with a nursing degree?
Educational Requirements
First of all, RN must have a bachelor’s degree. If the degree is a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN), then most classes will be sufficient as a condition for graduating from medical school. If the nurse has a diploma in another non-scientific field, it is important to pay attention to all required classes. If RN does not have a bachelor’s degree – this would be the first step to becoming a doctor.
The next step is to take the entrance test to Medical College or MCAT. The exam must be passed within three years of submitting your application to medical school. The MCAT is a standardized computer exam that evaluates problem solving, critical thinking, written analysis, and knowledge of scientific concepts and principles.
Unfortunately, previous experience in health care as a nurse does not give these people an advantage over others. In fact, it is possible that longer nurses will have an adverse effect on the exam. Most students join the MCAT in the last semester of undergraduate studies and intensively prepare for classes. Some large universities even offer student review courses. Nurses will have to find their own study programs.
The MCAT exam is similar to NCLEX, which is less focused on applications in the real world, and more on textbook learning. This may be bad for some nurses.
Stay
After completing four years of medical school, MD submits an application for a permanent residence program specializing in a particular field of medicine. The first year of stay is considered to be the year of internship in which the intern traverses through various specializations (general surgery, internal medicine, orthopedics, etc.) or changes into specializations within the specialization. Assessing and treating patients as a team with other interns and residents, attending lectures and being “on duty” at night for problems that may arise is the role of the intern and resident. Part of the training at the place of residence lasts three years or longer, and then can go to a more intensive training called a scholarship. MDs in the permanent residence program are usually paid from 40,000 to 50,000 USD per year.
Full residence and all other requirements
Before actually starting your stay, you must apply for participation in the program, take part in interviews and classify programs in order of preference. Residence programs also classify candidates. After everyone sends their lists, a computer algorithm adjusts the residents to the programs.
You will spend 3 to 7 years training as a resident doctor – it depends on your specialization. No matter where you make your residences, you’ll work for hours and cross borders. You’ll also need to pass USMLE Step 3 and the appropriate board certification exam.
